During the late evening
of December 4, and early morning of Dec 5, 1999, Wabaunsee County, KS,
West of Topeka, experienced
rain, lightning, thunder and what the weather bureau termed
"snow showers". The
first two photos from the left was the beginning of an limited maintenance
roadway
that was covered with well
over twelve inches of snow and deeper in drifts. Unfortunately
beneath the
snow was water-saturated
ground, and our Jeep sunk fast a half mile up the road, limiting
our picture
excursion in areas of the
Flint Hills that we had covered last Spring and Summer.
It has been several years
past, that this area of the Flint Hills has been covered with this much
snow.
Beautiful and still rich
in color, even though the butterflies, sunflowers and other flora and fauna
are non-existent this time
of the year.
